Cheif Medical Photographer
Adam Cooper, RBP, RBCA
North Shore-LIJ Studios
North Shore-LIJ Health System
Great Neck, NY

Job Description:

I am the Chief Medical Photographer and Manager, Graphics Systems at the North Shore-LIJ Studios of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY 11021. We are the 4th largest Health System in the USA and employ close to 40,000 employees. Our department covers a wide area of services including photography, video production, teleconferencing, digital signage and A.V. room design.

As Chief Medical Photographer, I am responsible for all the photography assignments that come through the department. We have a second photographer/studio assistant who shoots their own assignments and assists on the large scale photography assignments. Over the past several years, we have moved into higher end photography such as annual report photography and architecture. As a photographer in a large health system, the skill set required is multifaceted. We photograph patients in the studio, surgical procedures, portraits both in studio and environmental portraits on location, virtual reality tours, specimen photography, macro photography, glassware, x-rays, scanning, Photoshop work, poster printing and the list goes on. My philosophy has always been to try to add new services and products to our line-up as often as possible. This may require additional equipment and/or staff.

The best way to keep on top of the latest trends and products to offer is to be a part of a professional organization such as the BioCommunications Association. I am on the board of that organization as the Chair of the Certification Committee. My service to the organization has helped a number of working photographers as well as students move ahead in their career paths. It has also helped me tremendously in my career with contacts and continued learning in the
field. I am always happy to respond to e-mails regarding the field of medical and scientific photography and we are always available for tours of our facility in Great Neck, Long Island, New York.

The Rochester Institute of Technology has given me the base knowledge needed to take into the working environment and flourish in the field. Even though I may not be doing exactly what I worked on in school, the skills I learned in the Biomed Lab have allowed me to solve problems and create exciting images that have been published both internally and externally. Being a graduate of RIT has opened doors to me that would have not been easy to break through. I was hired for first job out of school completely based on my RIT resume. My second job out of school is my current position where I have been for close to 22 years.
