Freelance Graphic Designer
Mindy Proscia

San Francisco, California

Introduction:
Sometimes you end up in a place completely different from what you always imagined, and you wouldn't have it any other way. When I entered the Biomed Photo program in the Fall of 1996 I was determined to graduate and work at the Mayo Clinic as a medical photographer. No one could change my mind even though I had never been to Minnesota, much less been exposed to what it really meant to work in a hospital. Throughout the following three years at RIT I started to realize that working with computers in some capacity suited my strengths much better and I loved every minute of each class that at the time was referred to as "new media". Upon graduation I had the opportunity to move to the San Francisco Bay Area to work as an entry-level HTML developer.
I've had several jobs since moving to San Francisco in 1999 and in each and every position I called upon some part of my learning experience while in the Biomed Photo program. My knowledge of close-up photography has been particularly useful over the years, as I've needed to photograph jewelry and other small, shiny objects for websites or print layouts. Having the photographic background to truly understand what I'm doing in Photoshop (and being able to teach others, too) is also direct result of my time spent at RIT.

Job Description:
As a freelancer, a typical day for me can mean anything from client meetings discussing projects to spending hours photographing new items for a website. I love the variety and flexibility of working for myself. Even though I may not have followed the path I originally thought was meant for me, I've stumbled upon some interesting work, wonderful people, and a way of life that fits me perfectly.
